Forget the debates. How do people believe in god mentally?
I don’t mean this as “there’s no evidence, therefore God isn’t real,” or as another debate about whether the arguments for or against God are philosophically valid. What I genuinely cannot comprehend is the **mental experience*** *of actually believing in God. I grew up in a religious household so I understand the indoctrination argument but that doesn’t explain my own experience. At some point when I became properly conscious of the ideas I was being taught I remember essentially thinking, “What are you even talking about?” The concept of God itself just never felt intuitive or real to me. When someone says “God has a plan,” “everything happens for a reason,” or “God is watching over you,” my brain doesn’t naturally experience those statements as descriptions of reality. It also never did when I was young as well. I thought my family was talking about some of my relatives who was apparently very strong lmao. These statements always felt like concepts someone was telling me to accept rather than something I had to debate or think about. It simply made no sense or provoked no thought from the start. As if saying “that pen can fly”. I can understand the words and I can understand the philosophical arguments people make but I cannot understand what it is like for someone to genuinely experience “God exists” as an obvious or fundamental truth. I can’t even understand it from an agnostic perspective. Is it something you consciously reasoned yourself into believing? Does God actually feel present or real to you in some way? Is it more like an intuition that you can’t really explain? Or is it simply something you accept as a basic fact about reality, the way you accept that the external world exists? Because for me, the absence of belief isn’t something I had to reason myself into it feels more like the default. It’s as if my mind is strictly materialistic and I can’t even bring myself to explore anything spiritual.
And as I got older and spent some time watching the debates, it began sounding even more ridiculous to me. Pure psychosis. I always go with the ‘what about the baby who was born into a torture cult and died at the age of 5?’ argument because they love talking about ‘it was meant to be, its a life lesson, god saved you, devil did that’ claims. And the thing is even debating feels stupid to me because what do you mean??? Like?? Does anybody feel the same? #religion source
