Why is plasma physics and astrophysics usually a separate department from regular physics?

Speaking as someone doing plasma physics right now. I was wondering if there any core concepts that warrant them being a different department from "normal" physics (particle physics, biophysics, optics, acoustics, condensed matter, etc)?
