Although the Soviet Union initially signed a nonaggression pact with the Nazis, they later got invaded.
Getúlio Vargas's Estado Novo and Chiang Kai-Shek's Kuomintang regime similarly kept friendly ties with Germany before Pearl Harbor and the Second Sino-Japanese War, respectively. Both of these countries fought the Axis directly, with Brazil sending 25,000 troops – the "smoking snakes" – to the Italian front, and even being asked to occupy Austria. The Brazilian government refused.
China suffered over 20 million casualties during WWII, in addition to horrific war crimes. The Kuomintang and Communist Party of China briefly put aside their enmity to fight the Japanese, only for civil war to resume after 1945. #history
