Has anyone ever roadtripped in a small car?

My husband and I have big dreams one day of owning a driving camper. The past few years we've felt the weight of how short life is. We've seen family and friends get sick, pass away, and slow down. We are 35 and 37 and we are growing deeply impatient to "wait for the perfect time" to see the US.

We don't have the money for a camper at this time and it would be foolish to sell our home in a desirable area (...plus that 2021 interest rate...) for this dream. Although, to be honest the temptation is there.

The idea of waiting until retirement to do this makes me feel absolutely SICK.

ANYWAY

Here are the facts:

1. Home base is in NJ
2. We would LOVE to drive **west to Wyoming and travel north into Montana/Idaho** from New Jersey. I have never been to the midwest so I am also interested in seeing America this way too.

2.2That is roughly 2100 miles just to Wyoming itself from NJ -- which is arguably a lot

3. The reason we dont want to fly is we have a small dog who loves to hike with us. Shes around 7 years old and we'd love to spend time exploring with her before she becomes a senior dog

4. We would choose a mix of airbnb/tenting. We are experienced campers and have all the gear and whatnot that we'd need...it just takes up a lot of space in my small car.

5. I have a financed 2016 Subaru Impreza with about 80k miles on it.(stupidly, its not the hatchback...) I work from home so I don't drive it too often and would be happy to take this car on a road trip.

6. I work from home and have a fair amount of PTO, my husband is off in the summers and off for a good amount of time in between semesters in the winter.

7. Edit to add- we are aware that dogs are not able to hike most if not all trails at the NPs we'd drive through. We're ok with it for the road trip experience.

My husband thinks my car is too small and, I kind of agree with him, but it's what we got. His car is a mid size sedan but it's a lease. Neither car can tow anything.

Looking for advice on how to approach this trip.

1. Renting a car to go that far seems absolutely insane in miles/price when I have a working vehicle that can easily push it in miles and handle different weather.
2. 1.2 Renting a camper also seems really expensive and not meant for a trip that far
3. Has anyone here made a road trip in a sedan? Pros/Cons?
4. Are we stupid? (oh dear god please be nice, lol)
5. Is involving a dog in this trip not worth it? Will we be held back by having her with us?
6. Any other tips and tricks would be welcome!

also, how TF are you guys getting route pics in your posts? i keep getting mine removed because I guess I dont "own" the google maps image
