It actually really does matter who started it
When I was younger, teachers and parents would always tell me it doesn't matter who started it, what matters is who will be the better person and resolve the conflict. While I don't disagree with the sentiment of want conflicts to come to a resolution, in my opinion it really does matter who started it and it is indeed the crux of any problem. A person who intentionally hurts you while you have done nothing to them is a bully. A person who hits your car on the road while you are minding your business is the one at fault. Killing someone in self defense absolves you from any guilt if the other person \*started\* to attack you. It feels kind of indefensible to say the person starting the conflict won't always have at least some guilt.
