“American Idiot” is not a good Green Day album
Went to watch them in their Saviors tour here in Toronto yesterday, and this is the tour where they celebrate the anniversaries of both Dookie and American Idiot by playing all tracks from both albums.
It’s like seeing two different bands performing, and you could see a clear division among fans between those more excited with songs from one vs the other. Most of the crowd clearly had a preference for American Idiot as more people would get excited and sing along, hence why my opinion is unpopular, but there were also some 40ish folks (my crowd) who were leaving in the middle of the American Idiot part, after Dookie had been fully played.
Now I don’t mean to say that American Idiot is a bad album per se, one could make the claim that it’s an album with more production value, it just lacks the raw energy and punk angst from what made people fall in love with Green Day back in the 1990s.
They got older, richer, successful, and as musician and artists they probably wanted to explore new styles, I get that, but I couldn’t help but feeling disappointed that American Idiot seems to be THE defining work by Green Day to a lot of people who went to see them.
