What kind of effect can years of isolation in teenage years have on a person?
I spent my entire teenage years (from 13 to 19 - which is how old I am now) fairly isolated from others, I barely went to school, literally just enough to pass, had depression so I never had the motivation to interact with others so I just didn't connect with other people, and the few friends I had were in niche online spaces where we discussed obscure untranslated Japanese horror visual novels from the late 90s and early 2000s. I honestly don't think this was a bad thing, I don't have social anxiety or anything and I had fun on my own during those years, even if my teenage experience was very different from that of other people. But I was wondering what kind of impact that had on me mentally and how it shaped the person I am now?
I used to be a fairly normal and friendly kid who could make friends relatively easily before puberty, but I'm very disconnected from others now, I just feel like there's wall between me and other people, except for the few people in those niche spaces I share interests and values and opinions and priorities with, most of the people I meet on a regular basis irl feel so different from me in their lived experiences, perspective on the world, what they want from life, etc, and I think it's mostly because of how different our adolescence was. I'm also rather avoidant and distant, stay away from people because I think they'll make my life harder in the long run, and very averse to emotional vulnerability or openness, I'm ridiculously private when it comes to my feelings or struggles.
What kind of impact can isolated teenage years have on a person for the better or worse?
