What has your need to be right cost you? Have you ever…

What has your need to be right cost you?

Have you ever found yourself in a disagreement where you became so determined to prove your point that you stopped listening to what the other person was saying?

I know I have.

And looking back, I often wonder what I actually gained from being right.

Over the years, I have learned that one of the greatest obstacles to personal growth is our need to defend what we already believe.

Think about it.

We enter conversations carrying years of experiences, beliefs, and opinions. And when someone challenges those beliefs, our first reaction is often to defend them rather than question them.

But what if the other person knows something we don't? What if their experiences have given them a perspective we have never considered?

How would we ever discover that if we are too busy defending ourselves?

I have come to understand that being right and being willing to learn are two very different things.

Being right can satisfy our ego. But being willing to question ourselves expands our awareness.

And sometimes the price of proving ourselves right is far greater than we realize. We lose meaningful conversations, damage relationships, create unnecessary conflict, and miss opportunities to grow.

Today, I challenge you to approach your next disagreement differently.

Instead of immediately defending your position, become curious. Ask questions. Listen to understand. Consider the possibility that there might be something valuable in a perspective different from your own.

You don't have to abandon your beliefs to appreciate someone else's.

Because the goal in life should never be to win every disagreement.

It should be to continue becoming a wiser, more compassionate, and more understanding version of yourself.
