🇨🇴 Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s president on 7 August in Cali, pledging a tougher campaign against drug trafficking and illegal armed groups. The U.S. State Department said it intends, working with Congress, to announce $1 billion in security assistance for his administration.
De la Espriella, a lawyer and businessman with no previous elected office, narrowly won the 21 June runoff. The official count gave his ticket 49.66% of the vote, compared with 48.70% for Iván Cepeda’s ticket.
