U.S. federal debt passed $40 trillion on August 19, 2026…

U.S. federal debt passed $40 trillion on August 19, 2026, according to Treasury data reported by the Associated Press. 📈 The total crossed the threshold about five months after reaching $39 trillion.

The figure is gross federal debt: it includes securities held by investors outside the government as well as intragovernmental holdings, such as Treasury securities held by federal trust funds. Debt held by the public is the measure most closely tied to borrowing in financial markets.

The milestone follows years of persistent deficits. The Government Accountability Office reported that total federal debt rose from $18.1 trillion in fiscal year 2015 to $37.6 trillion in fiscal year 2025, while interest on debt held by the public nearly doubled from about $500 billion in fiscal 2022 to about $1 trillion in fiscal 2025.

The statutory debt limit is $41.1 trillion, so passing $40 trillion does not itself change federal borrowing authority. ⚖️ The Congressional Budget Office projected that debt held by the public would equal 101% of GDP in fiscal 2026 and that the limit could be reached during 2027 if Congress did not change it.
