15 month old… how to survive

I don’t even know where to start. My little boy is amazing and obviously I love him so much. But I am completely burned out. He was always very ‘high needs’, in a sense that he just wants to play together. I can’t go to the toilet without a full on meltdown… sleep has been worse, but still bad… we can’t seem to wean him off the bottle around 5am. He will always wake around that time and either he will scream like he is starving or will just fuss until he gets the bottle. If we don’t give it it just results in getting up at 6 because he won’t settle. At this point I accepted he will just get the bottle, and at least we get to sleep in till 7 or 8.

If I try to do something while he is around he will just want to do the thing I am doing. For example, if I try to answer emails, he will make sure he is taping all the letters in the keyboard… or he will just be melting down because I’m not playing with him. This results in my time with him being just me playing with him. He goes part time to day care. So I am ‘only’ with him twice during the week. In theory this is good but honestly at this point I feel that it is worse than just me working those days. At least at work I’m not just a mum. I feel like I have no time for anything for me. No time for work. No time for hobbies. So it is just being a mum day in and day out. My career is disappearing. My partner is helpful and he stays with him also a day during the week. He keeps telling me to take some evening for myself, which I am trying but it seems that something always happens to prevent that (like getting sick). He is doing everything right. No complains there.

People say get a village. And I guess we have one. But our village has their own kids and can’t just drop everything to help us. Recently we were very sick and I realized how alone we are in this… our friends with kids couldn’t get sick for us to protect their own household, and our friends without kids obviously didn’t want to get sick either. We don’t have family close by.

I don’t know what I want with this post.. I guess I just want to vent. We always wanted to have a second child but now it just feels irresponsible, since I feel I can’t even take care of this one while remaining sane…
