how can i politely make clear to customers that their comment is weird/made me uncomfortable?
i am female, and working in a public facing role; it's a small business with many regular customers, and i work alone. for this reason, i don't feel able to outright go "that's not appropriate". by comments, I mean I feel like a weird amount of male customers make subtle comments on sex or related things way too much eg making a jokey comment about how their dog would get in the way of their sex life with their ex, or making an innuendo about positions or something being big. the worst thing is, many of these men dont outwardly seem creepy before that, so i always find it really surprising. and sometimes customers (male and female) out of nowhere will comment on my appearance, and it always makes me uncomfortable because i dont know what to say or do. how can I act in a way that will discourage these comment, without outwardly saying I find it uncomfortable? working alone makes it so I don't want to act in a 'bold' way. I know that some people will always be creepy, but I think that a fair few of these people aren't creepy but for some reason feel these are normal things to say to someone in their workplace - how can I subtly discourage these people from making comments like this? or am i just being too sensitive or something?
