Should I trim?

These hydrangea got very big and thick last summer. I know I should have trimmed and thinned them then but as a novice gardener I hesitated. Can I trim them now in the spring? I’m worried I’ll cut off this year’s flowers. Thank you for the help. I’m in the northeast US.
