Hard to be a kid these days collecting physical monthlies
When I was a kid in the '70s, comics were 25c, and then in the next few years quickly went up to 40c by the end of the decade
As a teen in those years in a low to mid middle class family, my parents gave me $5 a week allowance for having good grades and doing chores like mowing the lawn
I could go down to the spinner rack at local 7-11 every week and get at least 6-10 books, a bag of chips, a Hostess treat and either a soda or a Slurpee and have a good afternoon.
Now, 10 standard books cost about $50, and adding in the snacks would probably up it at least another $10. I don't know, but I think most families can't afford to give their kids about $250 in allowance every month.
I'm glad that there's the cheaper trades and the subscription apps out there for them to get their books, and they have a much larger backlog to go thru, with 50 more years of reading than I had.
But for us older readers, there's nothing like the feel and smell of those books with the cheaper paper in your hands while you read with your snacks.
