We recently took a quick camping trip in Takeno(Hyogo prefecture, along the Japan Sea coast.) and while checking out a really cool sea cave, we found lots of great shells AND I found a wonderfully worn beech board that I couldn’t resist taking home. I re-sawed the board and made a key holder for my wife, then using the leftovers made this shadow box with two of the nicest abalone shells we found that afternoon. I soaked them in vinegar, brushed them and sanded them from 60 to 1000 grit, then wiped with mineral oil. CA glued a couple of dowels to the shells, then added plenty of hot glue.
That board smelled absolutely awful when cutting it, but I like the perfectly imperfect results. I might just start dragging more junk home from the beach.
\*please note I am actually holding it upside down in this photo 😅 #diy source
