🌋 Anak Krakatau erupted early Sunday, sending ash across western Indonesia and prompting aviation authorities to suspend operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport and other airports.
The 30-second eruption followed signs of activity since Friday. By mid-afternoon, disruptions had affected 516 flight movements, including 202 at Soekarno-Hatta, and about 22,800 passengers.
✈️ Ash—not lava reaching the airports—was the immediate aviation danger. BMKG identified ash clouds reaching 20,000 and 50,000 feet and issued 50 aviation weather warnings as authorities coordinated airspace restrictions.
No casualties or evacuation order were reported. Authorities said airport operations will resume after joint monitoring finds the affected airspace safe; BMKG also reported no sea-level anomaly around the Sunda Strait.
