What is the best troubleshooting step for a new light fixture installation that is flickering

I put in a new light fixture yesterday and it started flickering as soon as I turned it on. I have checked the bulb and connections but it is still happening. What is the first thing you check when you run into this kind of issue with an installation. Sharing your experiences would really help.
