Son is going online college

My son graduated high school this past year and we’ve spent the summer visiting schools that offered a baseball scholarship.

A little background my son is smart but lazy when it comes to academics, and not very responsible. So in high school he missed a lot of days all 4 years, but would do well on tests. Well his GPA suffered until his senior year when he finally started to work. He bombed his SAT with an 898 since he was not there for the prep sessions.

He graduated with a 2.3 GPA which disqualified him for Division 1 & 2 schools for baseball. Most division 3 schools passed also but kept him on a scout rotation. He even has a division 1 school wanting him to transfer in 2028 if he gets his GPA up to 3.0.

That being said we looked at JUCO schools and NAIA schools to start out and got several offers. We met with most of the ones that really interested him and found a perfect school for him both academically and for baseball. The past 2 months we have done his orientation, dorm assignment, got all the financial stuff in line and even paid $2800 to the baseball program for extra out of state trips. He leaves in 3 weeks.

Yesterday I got a notification that my online meeting with the school was canceled because he was going to be an online student. I knew nothing about this so I went and pounded on his door and asked. He stated that he may not be eligible for NAIA baseball the first year since his SAT score was 898, it needs to be 950. He qualifies with the GPA but the SAT disqualified him according to the NAIA website. He gets his final determination on Monday.

If he can’t play ball he doesn’t want to move 400 miles just to go to school he says. I still want him to as the school knows his situation and has resources in place for him to make sure he succeeds academically. If he goes online he loses that resource. He also has a girlfriend that won’t do LTR well.

My question is, why didn’t the coach let us know in the past 2 months his SAT scores would be a problem. They’ve known. Also, how do I go about convincing him in person school is the right choice? We have had an argument already where I laid out all the pros and he just went defensive saying I think he will fail if he stays home and I’m trying to blame the GF.

Like I said he’s immature, irresponsible , and an introvert until he feels comfortable. I know he’s scared to leave home and baseball was the driving force to make him step out of his comfort zone.

Any advice would be welcomed.
