How to improve communication and social skills as a young adult?

Pretty generic title, but for context I'm (19M) a college student, whos going to soon be a sophomore,

I want to learn how to grow the number of people I talk to and be friends with. I feel like I don't relate on a lot of generic topics, like sports, shows, memes, news, etc. I've been kind of introverted my whole life, I'm also a maladaptive daydream (addicted to daydreaming) and so I've recently realized that it harms my relationships with people because it makes disassociate with connecting with people. In other words, I don't feel a heavy need to connect with others as much b/c im busy making stories in my head.

But I ALSO understand that connecting with people and learning to communicate and socializing is one of THE key cores of being human and also growing your network AND getting access to new insights and ideas from around you.

So what kind of advice do you folks recommend? I plan on joining a few clubs and rushing a professional frat (its hard idk if ill get in), but in general, how would I go out and meet new people, strike up a conversation, and keep it going? How could I do it right now (I was thinking of going to the city alone and just talking to random people, although thats kind of nerve racking).
