Trail food prep: dehydrated boiled horse meat “chips”

Not my first time doing this, but I’m prepping dehydrated food for 10 days hiking/mountaneering trip and decided to share the meat part.

I take horse meat and boil it first. When it reaches the first boiling point, I drain the water, wash the meat, then boil again (fresh water). I boil for about 2 hours until it’s ready. Horse meat is stiff - longer boil makes it softer, but for dehydration 2 hours is enough.

Then I slice it. The slices should be thin-ish (kinda like chips), but not paper thin , just normal thin slices.

Into the dehydrator:

* 70°C
* minimum 8 hours (I usually set it overnight)

My dehydrator is vertical, so lower trays get ready faster than upper ones. In the morning I usually swap tray positions.

When it’s ready, the meat becomes like a crisp chip - it actually crunches.

One more thing: I didn’t add any spices or even salt when boiling. I like the taste as-is.

This dehydrated meat is just step one. I also dehydrate veggies and carbs, then mix everything. On trail I just add boiling water and food is ready. I’ll post the full prep later.

Also… the “meat crisps” are dangerous)))))) I finished a whole layer just walking around and grabbing them one by one.
