I (25F) want to change the way I look. Not just going to the gym and getting fit, but my whole everything. I want to dye my hair, I wanna wear different clothes and get piercings. I want to dress a little more "alternative".
But I'm afraid of coming off as a poser. My brother is deeply into metal and hardcore rock, and suuuper judgemental of "posers" = people who dress the fashion, but don't know any bands and don't go to local shows.
I don't go to a lot of local shows because they are violent. I'm a young woman and I don't want to get hurt. Plus, I generally perfer a slower pace.
Do I have to go to hardcore shows just to gain the right to wear alternative fashion? I'm afraid to start wearing those things & then people will "test" me to see if I'm "alternative enough". My brother is the type of guy to do that.
I don't want to go full goth I don't think. But the fashion looks fun. I like the lace, ripped up shirts and fancy long skirts.
When I go out with my friends, I look down at my clothes and feel sick. Like I'm wearing the wrong stuff. I just want to throw my entire closet in the trash. But if I'm out shopping with my brother and suggest something (I saw a cute pair of shorts at Journey's) he kind of cringes and rolls his eyes, and says "well... if you want to". I get that he's my younger brother, but I see him as an expert on these things. I want his input but it's always dismissive.
I want to just suck it up and do it.
I made an appointment to dye half my hair black. I was so sure of it two weeks ago- but it's tomorrow & now I'm just wondering if I'll regret it. I'm afraid I'll buy all these new clothes and just hate the way they look on me. I'm afraid to get a piercing and then regret it, but the hole never closes and I'm left with a stinky piercing hole for the rest of my life.. I'm afraid to get a tattoo and then never be able to go to a japanese hot spring someday.
I'm also afraid it's too late to change. I've been a blonde my whole life. Can I really start dressing dark at 26 years old? I live with my family. I'm afraid they'll make fun of my "phase" behind my back (and to my face). My brother especially. I don't want to create distance between us because he thinks I'm a stupid poser.
Oh and lastly, I have very nice, healthy, thick hair. It's a pretty color (mix of blonde and brown) and every single salon I go to says, "People pay a lot of money to get hair like yours". This makes me feel even WORSE about dying it! It's why I've waited so long! I felt like my hair was "too valuable" to damage with dyes. But I'm reaching my limit..! It's my hair! I should be able to do what I want with it. But I still feel guilty like I'm destroying something valuable. #inspiration source
