I live in upstate NY and wanted to know what I should do in the event the power ever goes out in a winter storm for multiple days?
House is 2.5 story colonial that is 1400 square feet livable space, plus a basement with insulated rim joists and insulated attic. Walls of the house are mostly not insulated since the house is 100 years old. I went away the other day and my temperature went from 72F to 50F in 24 hours when it was 15F to 20F outside. That seems like it could buy some time in the event of a power outage, but I'm concerned about something like an ice storm that knocks out power for days.
I don't have a generator. My furnace and stove are natural gas but they both require electric to work.
I'd imagine freezing pipes would be a concern. Not sure what else would be a concern and how to prep it? What would I do with the water in the toilet or other pipes so it doesn't freeze and break things?
I'd imagine any long power outage I would just prep the house from damage and then head south to family's house to wait out the power coming back.
Just looking for overall recommendations to prevent damage in the event the power goes out in the super cold winter. #home source
