It seems like all around the world, growing conditions are changing very quickly, as larger aspects of the climate change and weather patterns intensify.
Many of us have noticed that plants that used to be successful in prior years, are struggling with heat, or exposure, or just producing disappointing yields. I’ve heard countless stories about tomatoes, not ripening due to stress, etc. - What formerly liked full sun, needs partial shade now.
Humans are intuitive creatures. Growing is a part of us. We understand, and have the power to adapt to and manipulate these situations, innately. It’s what separates us from animals.
what did your hands learn this year?
What did the soil teach you?
What lessons did the sun scorch?
After 2025…
I’m considering moving all my plants around, and rethinking my entire approach to planting in the spring.
The past few summers have taught me that shade cloth is a necessity moving forward. Maybe the way I’ve been growing my garden isn’t working anymore, and I need more cover. Might need to build a small structure and start vining my plants, for example.
This year, I kept it simple, but proactive after losses last summer.
I shielded my container garden in the spring with some potted arborvitae trees, and planted some native sedums and purslane inside their pots to retain moisture, and cool the soil.
The sedums and the purslane are just some things I found growing in the sidewalk. I noticed that they could really take a beating, and survive all summer with no maintenance. Really simple, instinctual companion gardening.
The weeds helped keep the trees alive on the hardest days. The trees kept the garden shielded from some of the most intense light of the day. They all did better, working together. And so far, through multiple heat waves, nothing has died. :D
Don’t be deterred by a tough summer.
I got crappy yields this year. Stunted growth, stressed fruits. But I didn’t lose a single plant. And I learned a lot. Not only about the plants, and what they like/tolerate. But also about how to adapt to a changing world at the pace of life.
