Beginner advice for making an outdoor coffee table?
My neighbor kindly gave me this live edge slab he was going to throw out. It's pretty flat from what I can tell, but definitely rough on both sides and has a minor crack down the center. Dimensions are approximately 20" x 40".
I'd like to make an outdoor coffee table out of it for my roof. Given that this was a free piece, seems like this might be a good beginner project. I was hoping you experts might be able to guide me on a couple questions:
**Planing**
I'm debating between trying to hand plane this or take it to a shop and get it professionally done.
* The two limits here are that I don't already have a hand plane (I'd love a recommendation), and that I don't have a good sense of the time it would take to complete this. I'd like to complete this project in a couple days if possible. * On the plus side, if I went this route I'm sure I would enjoy learning about it, and then I'd also have a nice plane for other projects. I have a second slab I was given here that would also need planing, and probably plenty of other projects that could benefit from the skill.
On the professional side, this would just move straight into the done column. So far I have one quote in my area at $120/hr with a half hour minimum. It'd be done and nice, but I wouldn't learn anything or gain a new tool.
**Finishing and sealing**
This is destined for an outdoor roof deck in Seattle. It's gonna get wet, it's going to be in the sun. I'd like to keep the live edge. But it's also not precious and meant to be a beginner project.
How would you finish and seal this? How much work is it to do? What's involved with keeping that live edge, especially outdoors? Any beginner guides you recommend?
Worth mentioning that for legs I am considering either starting with hairpin legs and upgrading later, or asking a friend about welding together some square tube into a couple box frames. We'll see what I have time for there– this seems like the easy part.
