Associated Press reported that the airport, Sicily’s largest, had been shut for a fifth consecutive day. Airport operator SAC said 36% of nearly 2,000 scheduled arrivals from August 6 through 12 were cancelled, while more than 600 flights were diverted.
The disruption reflects a specific aviation hazard: volcanic ash can damage turbine engines, impair aircraft sensors and reduce runway braking performance. Italian civil-aviation rules provide contingency procedures for Catania, Comiso and Reggio Calabria when Etna is erupting. 🌋
Diversions to Palermo, Trapani, Comiso and Lamezia Terme shift passengers and aircraft rather than restoring normal travel, adding onward transport and scheduling burdens. Operations can resume only after assessments of airborne ash, ashfall and runway conditions.
