The operation was officially known as "Operation Rock Wallaby". Here are the facts
When: The mission took place in January 2020 following the catastrophic "Black Summer" bushfires.
Where: It was led by the New South Wales (NSW) National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Why: The bushfires had destroyed the natural vegetation in rocky habitats, leaving surviving animals at risk of starvation.
The Animals: The primary focus was the brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata), an endangered species that lives on steep cliffs and remote terrain that is difficult to reach on foot.
The Food: Helicopters were used to drop more than 2,200 kilograms (over 4,800 pounds) of fresh carrots and sweet potatoes to different wallaby colonies.
Outcome: Wildlife officials used remote cameras to verify that the wallabies were successfully finding and eating the food drops
