Whats going on with this wood?
My grandfather made this box. It’s been sitting on a shelf or in a b1988. I just got it as a gift and wiped it down with a damp cloth to dust it. Tons of pigment came off on the cloth. Nothing transfers when it’s dry. Even on spots that were just wet as seen in the video. Is this a failed stain or topcoat situation? Something natural? Is there anything I can or should do to protect this wood? I have no clue what type of wood this is.
