Contractor mismeasured sliding glass door, wants to put 1.5 inch wood blocking on the sides to make it fit

Hi all, I’m a homeowner in TX and contracted someone I’ve known for a few years to replace all my sliding glass doors (3) and windows. All of the other doors and windows were replaced successfully, except the largest sliding glass door. When it was time to be installed, the installer (not the contractor who measured and ordered the door) told me the door was off by 3 whole inches. The door has 3 glass sections to it.

The contractor measured all the doors and windows at least on two occasions, and I also measured the doors and told him what I measured over the phone. I guess that was a mistake. None of this is really documented outside of a barebones agreement/invoice for the number of doors and windows and the agreed price.

The contractor’s solution is to put 1.5 inches of 2x4s on the sides of the ordered door. I said ok, but I’m not sure I’ll be happy with this. It sounds like it will be ugly, and I’m concerned what a 2x4 exposed to the elements will look like down the road. But I’m not sure what I can really ask for or demand in this case. I’ve paid more than half the job already but the final payment is due upon completion. The total for the job (3 glass doors and 6 windows) was about 23k. I know there are virtually no protections for contracted work in TX so I want to tread carefully. I’m looking for advice or suggestions for what to do.
