A hypothesis on why the US is investing in AI, despite dangers
Let me start by saying there is no proof I have for this, it’s just an idea that’s been simmering in my head as a possibility. I’m also not a regular here, so I have no clue if this is already discussed.
This hypothesis comes forth from the belief that if there are no regulations on AI and the US keeps pushing the AI arms race as is indefinitely, then there will be a point that the current internet infrastructure will be uninhabitable. This would give the US justified grounds to tear apart the internets infrastructure for our safety, without any major protest. I believe that if this were to happen right now, many people would protest against this, because the dangers of AI aren’t directly witnessed by enough people yet.
As a consequence, this would give the US the grounds to be responsible for creating a whole new infrastructure (think of Cyberpunk: 2077s old net vs. new net) in which they could justify total surveillance for the sake of eliminating all AI threats.
In other words, could it be that the US is applying accelerationism to AI, precisely to highlight the dangers of it, in order to achieve a surveillance state?
My problem with this idea is me wondering whether they *really* even need to do all of that. Is it not possible that through third parties, the US already has total internet surveillance? Is this a ‘coup d’etat’ of sorts to take all internet might in its own hands? #politics source
