DID YOU KNOW... that Valentine's Day stems from the ancient Roman Lupercalia festival?

Held on February 15, priests called Luperci—often running nearly naked with goatskin thongs—whipped women in the streets to promote fertility and purification, sacrificing goats and a dog at Rome's sacred Lupercal cave first. Later, Pope Gelasius I banned the wild pagan rites around 498 AD, shifting focus to St. Valentine's feast on February 14 to overwrite the chaos with Christian martyrdom vibes.

But unlike modern Valentine's Day, Lupercalia was a bloody, violent, sexually charged bash awash with animal sacrifice and feasting to ward off evil spirits and infertility.

History really said “plot twist,” didn’t it? 😅 It’s wild how something that started as a chaotic, goat-involved Roman festival somehow evolved into heart-shaped chocolates and candlelit dinners. From Lupercalia’s frenzy to handwritten love notes, that’s quite the rebrand. Humans have always found dramatic ways to talk about love, apparently. ❤️ Thanks for the mention, Drained!

Yes, all along I thought Valentine's celebration was all because of happy things, but this is part of history.
