How to handle invasive questions?

I was at a social event yesterday and this person I got talking to..after I said where I lived asked the following:

“Do you own it or are you renting?” As someone late 30s (female) and him in his mid to late 40s I was taken aback but the directness of this. I answered and told him I bought cause I didn’t know what else to say. He continues:

“Must have been pricey, was it?” (Hinting around at the price) I said “it was ok but yeah I mean isn’t everywhere these days!”

“So how many rooms, what’s the size of it?” ……???Again I felt a knot in my stomach at this complete stranger feeling it was ok to ask me this stuff that I was not volunteering…but again I didn’t know how else to reply without making it weird so I answered and said “em, 3 bedrooms. Does the job” he continues:

&“Where exactly abouts is it?” (After I told him the town name and I said it’s not far from X - like I gave him the general area) he kept pressing but I didn’t give him a street or estate name.

He was telling me a bit about himself being open I suppose (not that I asked for it) and must have seen nothing wrong with these questions but I found it rude and invasive. How do you avoid answering these direct personal questions without making it weird?

I spoke to him for 5 minutes and I don’t think he had bad motives but I found it very off putting. I wouldn’t ask people in work I’ve worked with for years if they rent or own and cost of house etc…
