We are selling my grandpa's property soon, and I will miss it.

I just have to get this off my chest. My grandpa turned 95 this year, and for the past year, he has lived in an appartment instead of his home. His property, which he has bought in the early 60s, actually consists of three large adjacent plots of land within a medium-sized town. Two have houses -my grandpa's and one rented out (to the same family since 1984) - the remaining area is garden.

And what a garden it is - or rather, used to be. Berry brushes of all kind. Herbs that grow like weed. It used to have apple, cherry, and wallnut trees, but only the apple trees remain, the others fell victim to storms or deseases in recent years. My mom once pointed out that the garden's condition reflected that of my grandpa.

There is also a large area designated for small-scale farming - think a row of 1x8 meter patches, with a small, shitty greenhouse next to it. My grandpa grew everything there. Salads, tomatoes, potatoes, aspagarus, whatever he wanted. Once, my brother brought me one of the rasberry brushes for my balcony (which is covered in pots), and it turned out some aspagarus seeds had found their way into the soil.

There is also a section where my grandpa simply decided to let wild growth of plants do its thing. His bees certainly liked it.

My grandpa had this weird ability to make any plant flourish. Still has, he has a balcony in his apartment, which we made sure to cover in plants, and everything there grows far better than one would expect from the lighting conditions. Whenever my mom had a failing plant (including an olive and a lemon tree, neither of which are native here), she gave them to grandpa and he somehow got them hale and healthy again.

For the past years, my brother has been using the garden, growing mostly potatoes and onions (which last far longer than any store-bought ones). And also trying to find a use for the apples, which is kind of hard since most of the family is allergic to them. The dog loves them, though. However, this year, we have to sell the property. I have many, many good childhood memories of that garden. Whoever buys it will demolish both houses, and that's fair - they're essentially falling apart. And, considering the property prices around here, I higjly doubt the garden will last.

We managed to salvage at least one berry brush, and (on my mother insistence) most of the roses, most of which are decades old.

I will miss that place, though, even if I don't have as close of a connection to it as my brother.
