Israel’s Central Elections Committee voted on 23 September to disqualify Arab political lists and individual candidates from the 27 October Knesset election. 🗳️
Al Jazeera reported that the decision affected the United Arab List and Hadash–Ta'al, along with an individual legislator. Adalah reported disqualifications of Ra’am, a Joint List including Hadash, Balad and Ta’al, MK Ofer Cassif, and former MK Sami Abu Shehadeh.
The reports differ in their description of the lists involved. Adalah said it would challenge the decisions before the Supreme Court. ⚖️
Under Section 7A of Basic Law: The Knesset, lists or candidates may be barred on specified grounds, including incitement to racism or support for armed struggle; a decision barring a candidate requires Supreme Court approval.
