Removing caked on stain and poly

I had an experience with a contractor who did some really sloppy work and caked on oil based stain and poly to this drawer front and above that I'd like to remove. I'm pretty overwhelmed with stuff I'm reading online between sanding (grit), chemical strippers, and other tricks.

Is there a suggested path to going about this? I'm expecting this to take some substantial elbow grease to get this back to bare wood.
