I want to build a SteamOS box, exclusively for streaming games. What's the minimum specs I need for smooth streaming?
Apologies if this question comes up a lot - everything I found for DIY steam machines was for machines that would run games locally.
I use Steam Remote Play or Moonlight very frequently on a few devices in the house, connected to my gaming PC, and the experience is great. For my living room TV, I use the moonlight app on an XBOX series X. It works fine, but I want to replace it with a smaller device that runs SteamOS.
What kind of specs do I need if I legitimately don't care about running games directly on the steam OS box? I have the following requirements: - Ethernet port (preferably 2.5gb, but 1gb is fine) - support for HDR 4K 120fps video (4k60 and 1440p120 really, I just don't want to limited by the box) - HDMI 2.1 and CEC - I want to wake it from sleep with a controller (my Steam controller specifically, but if I can do it with other USB controllers too, great) - Small, and quiet
Can I do this on a box with an integrated GPU, or am I gonna need to buy a small discrete GPU? What exactly does top-of-the-line hardware look like for this usecase, where I'm offloading the heavy work to another machine? #hardware #technology source
