Misunderstanding- what to do

Hi everyone! I was on really good terms with a vendor that I bought things from regularly. We were very happy to see each other every time I went by and this was over a period of like a year and a half. One time about a month ago I went and there was a long line (which is great!). I didn’t mind waiting even though it was like 20 minutes and people got out of line. When I got closer, I saw there was only one person taking orders and couldn’t see others. Usually there’s more, so I was surprised. I thought to myself they might be short staffed that day. When I got to the counter, I said my usual hello and asked the lady if they were solo that day. She said no, the vendor was there in the back. I didn’t know this because you can’t see from outside. I said “oh good! I’m glad b/c of the long line but its great”, as in i’m glad you have some help for a busy day and how nice they were doing well. Then the vendor said in an annoyed tone “I’m trying my best here.” My brain froze and I couldn’t figure out what to say and there were people waiting behind me, so I got my things and left.

Since then, they’re still nice to me, but we don’t really chat. They often will say hi but say they have things to do and get back to it. I don’t even know if this is the reason or they just are much busier now, but I feel like I offended them and they misunderstood my comment about the long line. It was meant to be positive that they had a long line as I was glad it was successful. But I don’t want to reach out and bring that up in case that’s not true at all. plus, we’re just acquaintances. Is there anything I can do? Should I just carry on and hope they forget and we can go back to being friendlier? Apologize? It is nice having those third space relationships, but I don’t have to. Thanks!
