We have fairly strict screen-time rules in our house. As a teacher I see a lot of the negative effects of over usage including lost sleep, inability to have a conversation or know words, loss of critical thinking, etc. I'm not against screens, but just want to make sure my kids have a balanced day/life. Anyway, the point is we have rules. We only do an hour of educational screens during the week (usually Minecraft), and have Sunday be screen free. They can do almost whatever game on Friday night and Saturday for 2-3 hours each day. My kids are 10 and 12.
Anyway, a new friend moved in close by and is over A LOT with his phone. (A friend to my 10 year old.) And he watches a lot of YouTube. I feel so strange telling this kid to turn it off at our house . . . but I know my kid is thinking he can change the rules if his friend is over. And then he'll ask to go to the friend's house where the rules are probably different. This is so freaking hard to control but I want my child to be healthy. This problem feels new to our generation, but I know figuring out family rules in different houses isn't new. (This isn't really a struggle with my 12 year old who mainly wants to code things and doesn't get as sucked into the crappy side of the internet.) Any advice? How do you handle screen time and friends, especially with preteens? I know this will change even more as they get older, sigh.
