I've had enough bad experiences that I don't trust my social instincts anymore.

A lot of social advice assumes the problem is, "I know what I want to say, but I'm afraid to say it." That's not my problem. My problem is, like, my brain just goes completely blank. My experience is more like staring into the void waiting for a response to arrive.

You'll hear people say things like, "Nobody knows what they're doing socially," but that doesn't really match my experience either. Most people seem capable of holding conversations, making friends, joining groups, and recovering from awkward moments.

People talk about not overthinking every word before they speak, or worrying they'll sound stupid, and the advice is always things like "just be yourself" or "stop caring what other people think."

I think my biggest hurdle is that I've had enough bad experiences where putting myself out there went horribly that I don't really trust my social instincts anymore. I feels like there's these social landmines everyone else can see that I'm somehow missing, and sooner or later I end up stepping on one.

Nowadays, my brain just freezes. I don't know what to say because I'm trying to predict whether whatever comes out of my mouth is going to accidentally blow up in my face. Does that resonate with anyone??
