How do I stay socially confident when I'm not included in…

How do I stay socially confident when I'm not included in a group conversation?

I'm trying to improve a specific social skill:

how to remain comfortable and socially confident when I'm physically present in a group but not included in the conversation, without becoming self-conscious or trying too hard to fit in.

I'm dealing with this at work. There are four of us in my office, and I spend around nine hours a day in the same room with the other three. They're quite close to each other, while I'm not part of their social circle. I don't particularly want to join their group, and I do have normal social relationships with other coworkers.

The difficult part is that when I'm in the office, the three of them often barely talk to each other. There can be hours of almost complete silence apart from work-related conversation. But when I leave the room for a few minutes, I can sometimes hear them chatting and laughing. When I come back, they finish what they were saying and the room becomes quiet again.

I know there could be many explanations for this, and I don't actually know what they're talking about when I'm not there. However, I notice the pattern and then find myself becoming very aware of it and wondering what it means.

So the social skill I'm trying to develop isn't how to get them to include me. It's how to behave naturally and confidently when I'm not included, without constantly monitoring the group or interpreting their behavior as being about me.

How do you handle being the "fourth person" in a close-knit group while remaining relaxed and socially confident? How do you keep yourself from becoming awkward, withdrawn, or overly focused on what the others are doing?
