‘AFlorida school tackles chronic absenteeism with unconventional model — and it’s working

Whoever wrote this should not be a journalist. This charter school has a 9 percent graduation rate. In 2017, ProPublica released a story about how some OCPS high schools seemed to be using charter schools to hide dropouts and pad their graduation percentages. One of the schools run by this company is mentioned extensively in the story. It’s the kind of stuff that happens when you punish schools for poor performance instead of fixing the problem, the latter of which no one seems able to do.

What kind of research did the news reporter do for this story? This is absurd and exacerbates the current problem of schools losing funding. More importantly, the story does so based on a false narrative. I’m happy for the kid mentioned in the anecdote, but what about the 91 percent who don’t graduate?

I’ve included a link to the ProPublica story.
