Flying in from the UK, doing an East to West and back…

Flying in from the UK, doing an East to West and back again US Road Trip Thoughts?

There comes a point where planning stops being enough.

You can map it, budget it, calculate every mile if you like… but eventually, you either go, or you don’t.

This is me choosing to go.

From late May through to early July, I’ll be in the United States of America with one clear aim to drive across it. Not just visit, not just stay in one place, but properly cross it from East to West, taking in the country as it unfolds mile by mile.

The journey begins on the East Coast. I’ll land, pick up the car, and head straight into South Carolina to spend a few days with a friend. A steady start. Something familiar before everything opens up.

From there, I move into Tennessee, where I’ll stay a little longer. It’s the last real pause before the road becomes the focus.

Then the journey begins in earnest.

Before pushing fully west, there’s a pull toward history — the kind that shaped an entire nation. Washington, D.C. stands as a possible early detour, with sights like the White House and the Lincoln Memorial. Places you’ve seen countless times in films and photographs, but never quite understood until you’re standing in front of them yourself.

From there, the road stretches outward.

Missouri marks the beginning of the long drive. Then Colorado, where the land rises and the air changes. Utah follows — vast, open, almost otherworldly in places. Nevada brings that contrast of silence and spectacle.

Further north, there’s the possibility of pushing toward Mount Rushmore a symbol carved into the rock itself, presidents staring out across the land they helped shape.

And then, perhaps even further, Seattle the far edge of the Pacific Northwest. A different atmosphere entirely. Coastal, modern, and reflective in its own way. A final stretch that turns the journey into something even more expansive than originally planned. I am also going to stay a few nights in the famous Las Vegas.

And eventually, California the edge of the continent, where the road quite literally runs out.

But this isn’t just about destinations.

It’s about everything in between.

The long highways. The silence. The unexpected stops. The people you meet without planning to. The real distance forces you to slow down and take things in properly.

There’s something about America that still carries a sense of scale and movement. Whether you agree with everything it represents or not, you can’t deny its presence. I want to experience that firsthand, not through a screen.

And if I’m honest, this plan is still evolving.

There are other ideas in my head — places I could go, routes I could take far too many to type out right now. I shall keep you updated.

And something tells me… it’s going to be bigger than I expect.
