40gal hot water tank is using 80 therms a month! 10 times the normal amount.
The number is so high that it doesn't seem possible. It was burning 7 therms a month in the summer. Then it was a colder than normal winter and the tank is in the garage. The lows were around 20F. Now, I know it will use more therms when it's cold in the garage. But 10x more than normal seems insane. It's 22 years old and getting replaced. I can't find gas leaks anywhere. It cost me $160 a month for hot water. Using less than average amount of water too. Anyone have a similar issue? How could it be 10x the therms? It seems like it would have to run all day and any time I pass it, it's not running. I'm baffled.
