Even with all our precautions pickpockets still got us at Milano Centrale
Earlier this week I was travelling with my family from Milano Centrale to Lucerne on a morning Eurocity train. We spent last week travelling in metros in Rome and Florence and constantly guarding our fanny packs, because of all the pickpocketing horror stories, so we thought we were in the clear. We were feeling relieved and ready to leave Italy with a great experience. We did not realise that we were making a mistake by letting our guard down inside our last train.
We were the first ones to board the coach in our train, but as we boarded the coach suddenly became chaotic and rushed. We realized our seats were facing the opposite direction, so our attention instantly shifted to finding our row and sorting out luggage. I asked my mother to step aside of the aisle to let other passengers pass by.
While all this was happening for a few minutes my mother did not check on her fanny pack and when she checked after stepping aside her passport was gone. And right after we realized what happened, we stepped out of the train and the police was already outside our coach. After we told about the stolen passport they took us to three girls they had just detained asking if we could surely identify anyone. I had seen one girl inside the coach but since we hadn't actually seen the theft, we couldn't be sure, so we opted to file reports and move forward. Losing a passport on a Schengen visa in an alien land was a terrifying experience, especially for my mom. It’s been three days, and I still have a hard time wrapping my head around how someone managed to steal it from a pack strapped to her chest. we were trying our best the entire trip to be watchful but we still fell short and ended up with this experience. #travel source
