Being spoken to like a child: what to say?

This is a niche situation.

I’m at a retreat and the host had placed out breakfast. This is a retreat of women in their thirties. The host said she was going to get out an egg bake for us to have.

I had got my coffee and pastry, and was standing there waiting for the egg bake. The kitchen is small and I was adjacent to the line.

Anyways, she sees me standing and looks at me, and says “Go sit down”. Not meanly, or unkindly, not even matter of factly. Just plainly. I told her I was waiting for the egg bake, and I watched her face and then added “unless it’s not ready yet”. She told me it’d be out in 5 minutes.

I said ok, and went and sat.

Later I was reflecting on this. Why did she talk to me like that? Why did I accept it? Any other self respecting woman would try to call it out and say “damn okay??” Kind of making a joke yet also calling out the way the host said it was kind of off.

Yet I just did it.

Does the host see me as a child? We all paid to be here.

I just reflect that if I saw someone standing in the kitchen waiting, I would never go up to them and say that. Even if they were younger. I’d only do that if they were kids.

I’d say “Can I help you with anything” or “what do you need”

Why did this happen to me? And how can I handle it going forward

Coffee in one hand, pastry in the other, waiting on an egg bake that was already announced is not loitering. That is breakfast. If the host talked down to you for standing near a small kitchen, skip the speech and keep it short: you were waiting for the egg bake, and you will move the second it is out. The post stops right when she sees you, so the actual wording changes the reply. What did she say?
