More than 45,000 school students protested in about 100 German cities on 25 September against possible conscription and mandatory medical evaluations under Germany’s new military-service framework. 🪧
The law took effect in January 2026 and retains voluntary military service. All 18-year-olds are asked to complete a questionnaire, but men must respond; mandatory medical evaluations for men born in 2008 and later begin on 1 July 2027.
The distinction matters because the framework does not automatically draft participants. Parliament would need to pass a further law for demand-based compulsory service if volunteer recruitment falls short or the security situation worsens.
The measures are part of a plan to expand the Bundeswehr to more than 260,000 active personnel and 200,000 reservists by 2035. 🪖 The protests put renewed attention on how that recruitment goal will be pursued.
