CIA Director John Ratcliffe met Russian intelligence counterparts in Moscow, the Kremlin said Wednesday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ratcliffe did not meet President Vladimir Putin and did not disclose the agenda. 🕵️
The previously unannounced visit was Ratcliffe’s first known trip to Moscow as CIA director. Axios reported that he travelled from Washington via Latvia on a U.S. government aircraft, while U.S. agencies did not comment.
The contact comes while Russia’s war against Ukraine continues and U.S.–Russia relations remain strained. AP reported that Washington told Kyiv a senior delegation would be travelling to Moscow and asked for a temporary pause in strikes in specified areas while it was there. ⚠️
What the meetings produced remains unknown. Intelligence-service channels can remain open during wider political crises, but the Kremlin said it was too early to judge whether the visit would affect broader relations.
