Bangladesh’s parliament held its first contested…

Bangladesh’s parliament held its first contested presidential election in 35 years on Thursday, with BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir facing retired Colonel Oli Ahmad of a Jamaat-e-Islami-led opposition alliance. 🗳️

The vote is indirect: 349 eligible members of parliament, rather than the public, choose the head of state. The presidency is constitutionally limited, with the president generally required to act on the prime minister’s advice.

The contest followed Mohammed Shahabuddin’s resignation on July 24, after which Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad began performing presidential duties. The constitution requires a replacement election within 90 days of a resignation.

It is the first presidential vote requiring balloting since October 8, 1991. BNP’s parliamentary majority gave Alamgir a large numerical advantage, while the open ballot and party-discipline rules made defections unlikely. 🏛️
