✈️ A technical fault in National Air Traffic Services’ flight-processing system disrupted UK departures on 8 September, with at least 600 flights to or from the country cancelled by late afternoon.
NATS said it had implemented a fix nearly four hours after the incident began, but the system was only starting to recover. The disruption spread to incoming flights across much of southern England.
Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham were among the airports most directly affected. Eurocontrol said some inbound services were being held at overseas airports, while easyJet reported knock-on effects across Europe.
British Airways said disruption would affect operations through at least Wednesday, after cancelling or diverting more than 100 flights. 🔧 NATS said it was working with airlines and airports on recovery; the contemporaneous reporting did not establish the fault’s cause.
