How can I accept compliments better?

Don't get me wrong, I always appreciate it when someone compliments me, but most of the time I can't quite "absorb" (for lack of a better term) the compliment. I mean, if someone comes up to me and says, "Wow, you're handsome," I don't really believe it. It's much easier for me to think they just said it to strike up a conversation or something, even though I have no reason to think they were lying to me.

Things get worse when it comes to the things I do. I tend to be too hard on myself — grades, sports, competitions, anything really — and the people around me know it. Let's take school grades as an example. If I get a 5 on a test and a friend comes up to me saying, "Relax, that test was really hard," I don't know if he's being sincere or just trying to be a "nice guy" so I won't feel down. On the other hand, if I get a good grade and someone praises me, I don't know if they're genuinely praising me or just saying it for the sake of saying it.
