My rising 7th grader hates school because he is not challenged at all.
My son is 12, and he has always disliked school because he's so painfully bored. He is incredibly smart and curious. Reads a ton, and we've always tried to foster his love of learning with every opportunity we can find outside of school (including doing some secular homeschooling curriculum to keep him excited about learning).
He was in a G&T program in elementary school, and is now on an accelerated track in middle school. It's still not challenging at all. He gets 100 on everything, is an excellent student (engaged in class, teachers always praise him), but he comes home saying he feels like he's "in prison" all day because he's not learing anything and 6 hours a day is a long time to be sitting in classes when the material doesn't feel enriching at all.
We also live in an area with good schools and many options for public schools, and he currently attends one of the highest rated public schools in our area.
During the summer, he goes to an academic camp for academically advanced kids. The days are longer than school days and the work is challenging - you'd think this is not how a kid would want to spend their summer, but he absolutely loves it. He's so excited about the material, takes meticulous notes and teaches us all about what he's learning. And he laments the fact that school is not like this program.
As he's gotten older, it's gotten worse. At least in elementary school there were more fun activities to supplement his day, but in middle school it's just class all day and he can't stand it.
I understand that school curriculums don't work for many kids for a variety of reasons, but I really don't know what to do here. I don't want school to be such a drag that he loses his love of learning (this is what happened to me as a kid). #relationships source
